Keep It Alive

There's a tendency to think that software development is a process that results in a working program that solves a business problem and then requires no more development. If you let go of the development team after the product is finished, you are running a huge risk. From time to time, I'm asked to repair software that has been out of development for many years and nobody remains who understands anything about the product. When this happens, trying to get the problem fixed can be a very tricky and expensive business. There's a great deal of knowledge that a development team has about their product. Even if they meticulously write down all this information, which is rare, it takes a great deal of time to go through it and figure out how to make changes and deploy the application. If you use a software product and depend on it for your business, make sure you keep the knowledge alive in the development team.
